Irene Wilhelmina Secrest was born on June 24, 1919, to Otto and Anna Duenow Seefeldt in St. Ansgar. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith in March of 1933; graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1937 and went on to graduate from Iowa State Teacher’s College in 1939 with her teaching degree.

Irene married Charles Donald Secrest on June 12, 1943, in Iowa City. She was employed for two years by the Army Signal Corps during World War II in Arlington, Virginia, while Charles served overseas in the Air Force.

Irene lived in Waterloo most of her life and was employed by Rath Packing Co and Waterloo Credit Bureau.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don in 2000, and three sisters.

She is survived by three daughters, Pamela (Bart) Barthelemy of Miami, Florida, Shari Koch and Carol (Darwin) Wissink, both of Niwot, Colorado; five grandchildren, Pamela’s children, Michael Schmidt and Jason Dugan, and Shari’s son, Jason (Amy) Koch; and a great-grandchild, Jason’s daughter, Kayla Koch.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 19, at Crist Mortuary in Boulder, Colo., at 5:30 p.m., 3395 Penrose Place, Boulder, CO 80301. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice in memory of Irene.

Irene will be buried at St. Ansgar Cemetery with her husband Don in the summer of 2014.
