The death of one of the esteemed citizens of Newburg Township, Mr. Henry Kirchgatter, was briefly mentioned in the last week's enterprise. The cause of death was announced cancer of the stomach. For several years he has been in poor health but it was only for the last few months that he has been considered really sick.
Early in June he went with Dr. Westenberger to Rochester, by then the disease was progressed too far to be benefited by an operation. He died on the 23rd of June and the funeral was held at Carpenter on the 25th of June. Rev. Landeck officiating and his remains were laid to rest in the Carpenter Cemetery.
Henry Carl Ferdinean Kirchgatter was born in Hamschear, Germany. He grew to manhood and in 1869 was married to Karoline Zelhau. In 1881 they came to America, and settled in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, on the farm which has ever since been their home.
Thirteen children were born to them. Of these Henry C. and Adolph, who reside in Worth County, Mrs. T. M. Maher of St. Paul, Mrs. A. F. Kirchgatter of Grafton, Mrs. Wm. Dederrichs, Mrs. Emil Grap, Richard, Gustaf, and Albert reside near St. Ansgar. They with their widowed mother mourn the loss of a kind a affectionate husband and father.
