Peter Leonard Maakestad was born January 25, 1906 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Martin Hannanias Maakestad and Emelia Nicolene Himle Nelson, the fifth of their six children. He is found using the name Leonard P or Lenard through his life.
He was baptized on March 11, 1906 at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa. His baptismal sponsors were: Mr & Mrs Albert Nelson; Lars Iver Olsen and Clara Olsen.
Peter married Josephine Mostek on October 5, 1934 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
The couple had 3 children:
Janet (Jeanette) Joy (b September 8, 1935, d April 2, 1994 Minnesota);
Lowell Gene (b March 23, 1937, d June 20, 1988 Osage, Iowa) and
Franklin Ray (b December 28, 1938).
Leonard and his wife Josephine farmed south of Oak Grove Cemetary. Like his father, he loved horses.

Leonard Maakestad died August 9, 1982 at Mitchell Co, Iowa and was buried at the Oak Grove Cemetery, Mitchell, Mitchell, Iowa.
Obit: Leonard's funeral service was at the Faith Lutheran Church in Osage, Iowa on August 12, 1982 at 1:30 PM. The Rev. Harold Larsen officiated. Mrs. Everett White was the organist and Mrs. Metz Drew sang "Rock of Ages. Casket bearers were Edwin Maakestad Jr., Maurice Maakestad, Jerome Mostek, Gary Klemesrud, Ronald Cullen and Charles Hansen.
There is a memorial for him at Find a Grave # 21819008 with his photo and a funeral card.
