Marlys Irene (Miller) Troe, 65, of Lake Mills, Iowa, died on September 8, 2014, at her home after a year-long fight with pancreatic cancer. She truly took on the meaning of “live each day like it’s the last” after her diagnosis in May 2013.

Marlys was born on April 25, 1949, at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin, Minnesota, one of five children to Orville and LaDonna (Perkins) Miller. She was baptized on May 16, 1959, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin and was confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church on May 31,1964. In 1967, she graduated from Austin High School in Austin.

Marlys was united in marriage to Gary Dean Troe on February 4, 1970. The date was a special one for both of them because it was Gary’s mother, Adeline’s, birthday and Marlys’ oldest sister, Judy’s, birthday.

Marlys and Gary were blessed with three children: Renea (Troy) Hagen of Twin Lakes, Minnesota, Barry Troe, Sr. of Thompson, Iowa, and Meridee (Mark) Ansel of Kanawha, Iowa. They were also blessed with nine grandchildren: Brandi (Nick Jepson) Hagen, Amanda (Brandon) Hovey, Barry (Krista) Troe, Jr., Kevin Ansel, Alexander Hagen, Marissa Troe, Andrew Troe, Makayla Ansel and Jaden Ansel.

Marlys loved her family and friends and would do almost anything for them. She was very caring, kind and compassionate as well as very soft hearted. She loved family gatherings and picnics — always making sure there was plenty of food. When there was a family picnic she could be found outside with the grandkids playing softball, volleyball, basketball or even football with them. Her latest game with the grandkids was bean bags. She also loved to play board games with her family, fish, travel locally, camp, gamble and bake for the holidays. She was especially proud of her lefse. Marlys loved anything patriotic and collected many angel trinkets.

Known as Grandma Gadget, Marlys loved being on her computer and carrying the latest and greatest camera. In her spare time, she enjoyed keeping up with friends old and new on Facebook.

Marlys worked in various factories until 1980 when she joined the workforce at Universal Circuits. In 2003, when Universal Circuits changed products and its name to Dielectric Corporation, she went to Menominee Falls, Wisconsin, for a four-week training to be a machinest. In 2009, she was laid off and turned her layoff into retirement in 2011.

In May of 2007, Marlys quit smoking after 24 years. She proudly remained smoke free.

Marlys is survived by her husband of 44 years, Gary; beloved dog, Molly; three children; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; siblings, Judy Weatherly of Stewartville, Minnesota, Paulette Page of Elysian, Minnesota, and Paul Miller of Austin. She is also survived by eight nieces, eight nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents; maternal and paternal grandparents; sister, Carol Earl; grandson, Lucas John Troe; father- and mother-in-law, Lawrence and Adeline (Crane) Troe; sisters-in-law, Donna Christianson and LaVonne Thomsen; brothers-in-law, Merlyn Sheldon, Sr., Donald Earl, Larry Troe and Carlyle (Curt) Thomsen; nephew, Larry Weatherly; great-niece, Nichole Thomsen; and several aunts and uncles.
