Anna Margaret (Morris) Retterath – June 8, 1810 – May 10, 1903

Lived Ninety-three Years.

Mrs. Anna M. Retterath, an aged lady of 93 years, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Peter Bissen, in Mitchell County, Iowa, Sunday morning, May 10, 1903. The funeral was held in Johnsburg Catholic church, Wednesday morning, May 13, 1903 the services being conducted by Rev. Fr. Schlee.

Mrs. Retterath was born in Kalfrath, Germany, Jun 8, 1810, her maiden name being Anna Maggie Morris. She was married in Germany and became the mother of seven children. Her husband died in the old country about 1864, and in 1872 she came to this country, several of her children having previously emigrated to the United States. One daughter, Mrs. Kate Simon, still resides in Germany. Another daughter, Miss Mary Retterath, died at an early age. Of the remaining children, all are living in this section with the exception of Mrs. John P. Meurer who died a number of years ago.
The remaining children Mrs. Are Chris. Mullenbach, Mrs. Peter Jax and Mr. Peter Retterath of Johnsburg, and Mrs. Peter Bissen of Mitchell County, Iowa.

The deceased lady was grandmother to 52 children, great grandmother to 92 and great-great grandmother to 1 child. Her faculties were not dimmed until death's hand touched her and she was familiar with the names and date of birth of each one of the large number of her descendants. Six of her grandchildren acted as pallbearers at the funeral.
