John Anton Klinger was born September 30, 1879 at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa to Anton Klinger and Cecilia Haberman from Austria. He had two siblings, Fredrick and Charlotte.

1900: Anton Klinger 49, Celia Klinger 44, Charlotte Klinger 22, John A Klinger 20.
John married Ida Ruston (Rusten) on March 17, 1910 at St Paul, Minnesota.

Death has claimed several in the county this week, among them John Klinger, 63, who had operated a grocery and general store at Mitchell for 40 years. . . suddenly from a heart attack.
JOHN KLINGER
John Klinger, 63, died Tuesday evening while calling at the home of a neighbor, Chris Olson, near his home at Mitchell. While Mr. Klinger had suffered from diabetes for several years, his condition was not thought to be alarming and he had been about his work as usual.
Mr. Klinger was born September 30, 1879, at St. Ansgar, and spent his boyhood there and at Mitchell. He was the last survivor of his family. From the time he was a boy he was interested in business and after completing his education he started his first store in Mitchell with a partner. The firm was Becker and Klinger.
Their clerk was Ida Rusten whose home was in Dakota, and she and Mr. Klinger were married in St. Paul, March 17, 1910. To them were born a son, Alton, who lives at Waterloo, and a daughter, Mrs. Helen Hartwig, of Los Angeles, California. Mrs. Klinger, their children and two grandsons survive.
Mr. Klinger was active in community affairs and for many years was city treasurer.
The time of the funeral service has not been set as yet, as the family is awaiting word from Mrs. Hartwig.

John Anton Klinger, the son of Anton and Cecelia Klinger, was born September 30, 1879, at St. Ansgar, Iowa, and spent his entire life there and at Mitchell. He moved with his parents in early infancy to Mitchell. It was at the latter place where he received his education, was baptized and accepted into the Catholic church. When the Mitchell Catholic church was discontinued, he desired to attend some church within his town, so for the balance of his life was a faithful attendant at the Baptist and Community churches.
He enjoyed the friendly contacts that came with serving the public, so in th eyear 1904, he with Conrad becker opened a general merchandise business which they operated until 1910, when this partnership was dissolved and he started the store which was to bear his name until 1942, when due to ill health he was compelled to retire.
On March 17, 1910, Ida Rusten of Grand Forks, North Dakota, and he were married at St. Paul, and to this union were born a son, Alton, of Waterloo, Iowa, and a daughter, Mrs. Helen Hartwig, of Bell, Calif., both of whom survive. He is also survived by his wife and two grandsons.
Mr. Klinger was active in the affairs of the community and for many years had served as the town treasurer.
John, as he was known to all the community, was a man of simple tastes and desired, obtaining a large amount of pleasure in a visit of an evening with friends, so it was perhaps fitting that on the evening of September 7th, at the age of 63, as he was enjoying one of these calls, death came suddenly to a man whose family figure and pleasant personality will be greatly missed in the years ahead.
Funeral service was held September 12th at 1:45 p.m. at the Champion Funeral Home, and at 2:30 p.m. at the Mitchell Community church. Burial was in the Mitchell cemetery.
The Rev. T.P. Solem, pastor, conducted the service. Those who came form a distance to attend were: Alton Klinger, Waterloo; Mrs. Harold Hartwig, of Belle, Calif.; Mrs. John Clark, Mrs. Earl Middaugh and Sanford Rustin, all of Minneapolis, Minnesota; the Benson family of Blooming Prairie, Minnesota; the Harvey and Chris Galbery families of Lyle, and Mrs. Golberg of Austin; the Jess Farley family of Stacyville, and the Carl Hartwig family of Osage.
Pall bearers were: L.R. Dockerty, Iver Tiedermanson, Jay Jones, Fred Titus, Will Wynn and Ernest Hansen.
