FUNERAL SERVICES ARE HELD FOR SON OF FIRST WORTH COUNTY SETTLERS
Northwood, July 22 – Funeral rites were held this afternoon for Lewis G. Mellem, 66, pioneer resident, who died at his home Sunday after an illness of several months.
Services were held at the Synod Lutheran Church preceded by brief services at the home on Fourth Street. The Rev A. J. Torgersno, pastor of the Synod congregation, conducted the rites.
Mr. Mellem was born near Northwood on November 29. 1864. He was a son of Gulbrand O. and Karine Mellen, the first settlers of Worth County.
They established their log cabin home on the east bank of the Shell Rock River in what is now the town of Northwood in the early summer of 1853. For more than a year they were the only settlers in the county.
They came here from the St. Ansgar settlement.
Mr. Mellem was first married in 1895 to Sophie Butler of Kensett Township. She died in 1902 leaving two daughters, Esther and Geneva who are living.In 1904 Mr. Mellem was married to Miss Signe Rorvig of Binfrod, North Dakota, who with their four daughters and one son, Agnes, Valborg, Lenore, Elvira and Lewis, survive him.
He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters, Charles G Mellem, Gustav G. Mellem, Mrs. T. C. Rone and Miss Minnie Mellem.Mason City Globe Gazette, July 22, 1931
