Obituary for Frank H. Altman

Frank H. Altman, 82, of Cedar Falls and formerly of Nora Springs died Thursday, May 2, 2014 at the Bickford Cottages in Cedar Falls.

A funeral service for Frank will be held 11:00am, Monday, May 5, 2014 at the St. Luke Lutheran Church, 101 N. Hawkeye Avenue, Nora Springs with Pastors David and Elayne Werges officiating. Burial will follow in the Park Cemetery, Nora Springs where full military honors will be provided by the Nora Springs American Legion H.D.S. Post 449.

A visitation with a public viewing will be held from 4 to 7pm, Sunday, May 4, 2014 at the St. Luke Lutheran Church and will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be left to the St. Luke Lutheran Church or the Nora Springs American Legion H.D.S. Post 449.

Franklin Henry Altman, son of Henry and Lillian (Peterson) Altman was born July 7, 1931 on the family farm near Osage, Iowa. Frank graduated from Osage High School in 1948, where he participated in four sports; winning a State Championship in wrestling. He attended Iowa State Teachers College for two years and was an All-American Wrestler, helping his school to a National Championship. In 1950, Frank was a member of the U.S. Wrestling Team that traveled to Japan, Korea, and Turkey on an exhibition tour. The 1950 Wrestling Team was inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Frank enlisted in United States Air Force in 1951 and served his country faithfully in Korea for four years, before being honorably discharged in 1955. Following his honorable discharge, he attended and graduated from Iowa State, again earning All-American honors in wrestling. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Sims of Colorado Springs, CO in 1955, later ending in a divorce.

Frank taught at Gilbert, Iowa from 1958 to 1959 before moving to Nora Springs where he taught at the Nora Springs Rock Falls High School. He was united in marriage to Evelyn Holt Treloar on August 1, 1963.

During his professional career, Frank never left the classroom, teaching for 41 years. He was honored as the Northeast Iowa District Athletic Director of the Year. In 1982, he was inducted into the Iowa High School Wrestling Hall of Fame. In 1988, Frank received a plaque at a Driver’s Education meeting in Des Moines, Iowa for 30 years of teaching Drivers Ed. He was one of two people to qualify for this honor and also was the first to introduce Drivers Ed to Opportunity Village in Clear Lake. He taught drivers education in Nora Springs, Sheffield, St. Ansgar and Manly. In 1955, he joined the Athletic Directors Hall of Fame.

Frank umpired both baseball and softball during the summers. In 2002, he was inducted into the Iowa Umpires Hall of Fame in Ankeny, Iowa. In 2009, Frank was inducted into UNI Athletic Hall of Fame.

Frank was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Nora Springs and a member of the Nora Springs American Legion H.D.S. Post 449.

Frank is survived by his three step-daughters, Carolyn Moore of Mason City, Arlene (Larry) Dodd of Washburn, Iowa, and Joetta (Jim) Kelley of Evansdale and a step-daughter in law, Delores Treloar of Edmond, Oklahoma; 11 step-grandchildren; 21 step-great-grandchildren; and 12 step-great-great grandchildren; two nephews, Doug (Evelyn) Pelleymounter of Northfield, Minnesota and Steve Pelleymounter of Warba, Minnesota; two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn; sister and brother-in-law, Frances (John) Evenson; step-son, Jerry Treloar and two step-son-in-laws, Kenneth Moore and Bruce Paine.
