Services for Dean M. Frein Sr., 50, of 2141 E. Fourth St., will be noon Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. There will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Oppold Funeral Home, where friends may call after 3 p.m. Thursday and until 11:30 a.m. Friday. He died Wednesday at Schoitz Memorial Hospital of emphysema.

He was born November 5, 1930, at Osage, son of Joseph and Julia Hemann Frein. He served in the Navy Air Corps during the Korean War. He attended the University of Iowa and graduated with a master's degree in journalism.

He married Patricia Sprung on September 5, 1956, at Moline, Illinois. He came to Waterloo in 1965, where he worked for Black Hawk Broadcasting Co. as a newsman for KWWL, until retiring in October 1980. He was a charter member of the Cedarloo Sertoma Club.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dean Jr. of Cedar Falls and Thomas of Waterloo; a daughter, Mrs. Sandi Brennan of Waterloo; four grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. Julia Frein of Osage; five brothers, Dick and Wilmer, both of Garner, Marvin "Bud" of Minneapolis, William of Des Moines and Robert of Osage; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Alice Merrick of Osage and Mrs. Patricia Ahrens of Mason City.

A memorial fund will be established later.
