Excerpt from the booklet "Meroa", 1977 by Gertrude Crowell:
Nels Johnson, one of the pioneers of Mitchell County was born in Norway in 1822. He was raised on a farm but when a young man, learned the trade of stone mason. He was married 1840 to Annie, daughter of Nels Nelson. In 1850, they immigrated to America and located in Columbia County, Wisconsin. Here he bought a quarter section of land. He remained there working at his trade and farming until 1854, when he came to Mitchell County and settled on S24-T98-R17. It is believed that the family first lived in a cave above the side of the Cedar River, west of Osage, IA. He died here in August, 1855, leaving a widow and six children to mourn his death. The children were: John N., Martha, Nels, Martha, Tom and Mary.
In 1856, the family moved to S1-T98-R18. Their oldest son, John, was born in Norway in 1841. He made his home with his mother until 1862, when he went to Wisconsin and lived one year, then returned to the Meroa, Iowa area. John was married to Jane Nelson in 1863 and at that time settled on his present farm on S12-T97-R18. They were parents of five children: Nicholai, Edward, Isabella, Caroline and Martin.

From the "1911 Mitchell County Atlas", section 2, page 18: One of the earliest funerals in Cedar township was in August 1855 for Nels Johnson. He was buried on the west side of Cedar River, in Newburg Township. The service was conducted by Rev. C. L. Clauson. This occurred before Cedar Township had a cemetery. The first estate administered upon was that of Nels Johnson, deceased, March 22, 1856.

Note: Found conflicting birth dates of 24th or 30th, 1820, am sure the birth year is 1820, not 1822.
