Gunhild (Nellie) Jorging (Georgianna) Johnson was born April 29, 1869 at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa to Lars Helgesen Johnson and Brita (Betsey) Eriksen, the oldest of their three children. She had two younger siblings, Hanna Emelia and Ole Johan and four half-sisters: Breta Helen, Estella, Clara Louise and Olive Adelia.

Nellie was baptized at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and confirmed at same on June 7, 1885.

Found in the 1870 - 1885 censuses living at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1870: Lewis (Lars) Johnson 35, Betsey Johnson 29, Corneliu (Nellie) Johnson 1, Julia Erikson 64, Peter Christianson 20.

1880: L. H. Johnson 45, Isabel Johnson 31, Nelli Johnson 11, Hanne Johnson 9, Ole Johnson 8, Hellen Johnson 2, Estela Johnson 3mos, Ole Iverson 27.

1885: Lars Johnson 49, Bell Johnson 36, Nellie Johnson 15, Hannah Johnson 14, Oley Johnson 12, Ella Johnson 7, Estella Johnson 4, Clara Johnson 3.

Nellie married Charles Lepley Hays (1858-1934) on January 5, 1910, his 2nd marriage. They had no children; she was 40 years old. Charles had been married before and had a daughter.

Found in the 1910 census at Eldora, Hardin, Iowa: Charles L. Hays 52, Nellie Hays 41, Loduska Hays 3, Christina Hays 75.

Nellie's 2nd marriage was to Edward Wood (1858-1920) in 1917. The couple lived at Colfax, Jasper, Iowa but their marriage only lasted 3 years due to Edward's passing.

Found in the 1925 census at Colfax, Jasper, Iowa: Nellie Wood 55, renting a room, widowed, teaching.

Found in the 1930, 1940 censuses at Washington, Jasper, Iowa:
1930: Nellie J Wood age 60.
1940: Nellie Wood age 70.

After retirement, Nellie moved to Manly, Worth, Iowa. She died February 16, 1956 at Mason City, Cerro Gordo, Iowa and was buried at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church Cemetery, Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa.

Obituary from Mason City Globe Gazette, February 17, 1956: Services for Mrs. Nellie Wood to Be Saturday- MANLY-

Mrs. Nellie Wood, 87, died Thursday at a Mason City hospital. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 at Bride's Funeral Home, Manly. The Rev. C. R. Frankhauser will officiate. Burial will be at Rock Creek-Cemetery, Osage.

The daughter of Lewis and Brita Johnson, she was born in Mitchell County. She attended Iowa State Teachers College, Cedar Falls, and was graduated from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. Mrs. Wood taught high school in Iowa for many years.
She married Edward Wood at Colfax in 1917. Mrs. Wood retired in 1933 and had lived with her sister, Mrs. Hannah Field, Manly.

She was preceded in death by her husband and one sister.

Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Field, Mrs. Stella Wahl, Miss Clara Johnson and Mrs. Olive Howe, all of Osage; a brother, 0. J. Johnson, and a foster daughter, Loludska Lumley, Hampton.
