Obituary:

Funeral services for a well-known Osage retired farmer, Clarence A. Johnson, 82, were held Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran church, with the Rev. Joseph Nesheim and the Rev. Harold Larsen, pastors, in charge. Burial was in the Newburg cemetery at Carpenter and arrangements were by C.R. Champion and Sons.

Mr. Johnson died at Mitchell County Memorial hospital Sept. 14 after suffering a heart attack Monday. Clarence Alvin Johnson was born March 1, 1897, in Worth county, the son of Anton and Agnetha Gulbransen Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Deer Creek Lutheran church near Carpenter.

Ruth Parker and Mr. Johnson were united in marriage Mar 2, 1918, and to this union 14 children were born. He farmed for many years until his retirement, in the Osage, Carpenter and Orchard areas. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran church.

Survivors include his wife Ruth; six sons, Dale, Charles, Harley, Ivan and Kenneth of Osage, and Keith of Fort Dodge; six daughters, Mrs. Alvy Borcherding (Florence) of Northwood, Mrs. LaVern Schallock (Eleanor) of Floyd, Mrs. Lowell Olsen (Margaret) of Osage, Mrs. Norman Sponheim (Mildred) of Nora Springs, Mrs. Al McLaughlin (Carol) of Belmond, and Mrs. James Boyce (Sharon) of St. Paul; 53 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces.

Preceding him in death were two infant children, his parents, one brother, eight sisters and two granddaughters.

Clarence Alvin Johnson was born March 1, 1897 on a farm in rural Carpenter, Worth, Iowa to Anton Johannesen Johnson and Agnethe Gulbrandsdatter, the youngest of their ten children.

Found in the 1900 - 1915 censuses living on a farm at Deer Creek, Worth, Iowa:
1900: Anton Johnson 58, Agnete Johnson 50, Alma Johnson 14, Ida Johnson 11, Arlene Johnson 8, Clarance Johnson 3.

1910: Anton Johnson 64, Agnesse Johnson 60, Alma Johnson 23, Ida Johnson 21, Arlie Johnson 18, Clarence Johnson 13. 1915: Clarance Johnson age 15.

Clarence married Ruth Verda Parker on March 2, 1918 at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter, Worth, Iowa.

The couple had 14 children who were all born west of Carpenter in Barton township, Worth County, Iowa:

Eleanor Gayle (b September 4, 1920);
Hazel Arlene (b February 6, 1922, d March 2, 1922 Worth, Iowa);

Margaret Jean (b March 19, 1926, d January 12, 2003 Rochester, MN);
Mildred Lucille (b April 6, 1928);
Charles Anton (b March 15, 1930);
Harley Duane (b December 14, 1931);
Ivan Wayne (b December 12, 1933);
Baby boy (stillborn September 14, 1935 Worth, Iowa);
Carol Ruth (b April 29, 1937, d October 26, 2004 Belmond, Wright, Iowa);
Kenneth Dean (b February 15, 1939, d August 14, 2000 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa)
Keith Allen (b November 29, 1940) and
Sharon Fay (b July 5, 1943).

1930: Clarence Johnson 33, Ruth Johnson 32, Florence Johnson 11, Eleanor Johnson 9, Dale Johnson 5, Margaret Johnson 4, Mildred Johnson 2, Charles Johnson.

1940: Clarence Johnson 43, Ruth Johnson 42, Dale Johnson 15, Margaret Johnson 14, Mildred Johnson 11, Charles Johnson 10, Harley Johnson 8, Ivan Johnson 6, Carrol Johnson 2, Kenneth Johnson 1.

Clarence A. Johnson died September 14, 1979 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa and was buried at the Carpenter Cemetery, Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa.
