Matthew “Matt” McCook – May 6, 1861 – May 27, 1944
MCCOOK RITES HELD TUESDAY
SERVICES WERE IN BOTH SIGN, ORAL LANGUAGESRiceville --- Funeral services for Matt McCook were held at Loper’s Funeral Home at 3 o’clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. J. Cordes of St. Paul, a Lutheran missionary to the deaf, in charge. The Rev. Jonas Priestley, pastor of the Riceville Congregational church opened the service with an invocation. Mr. Cordes used both the sign and oral languages at the same time for the benefit of the hearing and deaf groups.
Elinor Martin and Floria Kistner sang “Never My God to Thee” and “Only Shadows” accompanied by Mrs. Loper. Mr. Cordes read an obituary, then preached. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.
Among the out-of-town relatives of Mr. McCook were his son, Edward L McCook of Temple City, California, his brother, James McCook of San Francisco; and his sister-in-law Mrs. Ed McCook of Pendleton, Oregon.
The pallbearers were Wade Moore, Arthur Wagner, Tom Christian and Walter Poshusta, all of Mason City; Carl Barnd of Forest City and Palmer Lee of Clear Lake. Other out-of-town deaf persons at the service were Mrs. Palmer Lee, Mrs. Carl Barnd and Mrs. Walter Poshusta.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Matthew McCook was born May 6, 1861 in Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Thomas McCook and Euphemia (Brown) McCook.
He married Minnie Bowser, the daughter of Jacob Bowser and Mazie (Perdew) Bowser. His wife Minnie died in 1926.
They had 3 children, Mable, Faye, and Edward.
