Last rites for a well-known retired farmer of the Burr Oak community, Henry J. Ketelsen, 82, were held Saturday afternoon. Mr. Ketelsen died on February 11, 1981, at the Riceville Nursing Home.
Rev. J. Nesheim, pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran church, was in charge of the services at the Champion Funeral Home, and burial was in the Osage Cemetery.
Henry Jurgin Ketelsen was born on January 7, 1889, at Dysart, Iowa, the son of August and Ann Arp Ketelsen. He came with his family to Mitchell County in 1911.
Ellen Lundberg and Henry Ketelsen were married in October 1923. They established their home on a farm in Burr Oak Township. He was baptized and confirmed at the Osage Lutheran Church on June 2, 1933. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and served on the Little Cedar school board for a number of years.
Surviving are four daughters: Mrs. Charles Crites (Fern) of Vidor, Texas, Mrs. Virginia Howell of Kissimmee, Florida, Mrs. Russell Bensend (Janet) of Riceville and Mrs. Donald Esslinger (Carole) of New Hampton; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother, Elmer Ketelsen of Osage; three sisters: Mrs. Wilma Snyder of Osage, Mrs. Louis Peterman (Mary) of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and Mrs. Avery Brush (Lorraine) of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his wife Ellen and his parents.

#2:Henry Jurgen Ketelsen was born January 7, 1899 near Dysart, Tama, Iowa to August Jurgen Ketelsen and Anna Marie Arp, the first of their five children.
Found in the 1900 census living at Perry, Tama, Iowa: August Kettelson 28, Annie Kettelson 24, Henry Kettelson 1, Wilmoth Kettelson 3/12.
Henry recalled his childhood (as told to Elmer, his brother):
"When we were children, railroad bums would sleep in the barn, since the farm was so close (east of the railroad). One day, while the folks were visiting the neighbor a few miles away, I (Henry) went into the hay loft to throw down some hay. I put my fork into what I thought was a sleeping bum. I was so scared, I went down the hay chute, got on a horse, and rode to where the parents were."Henry was a good horseman. He helped neighbors with shocking oats, haying, sowing and picking corn by hand. He went to rural school through the 8th grade.

His folks bought a farm in Burr Oak, Mitchell County, Iowa in 1911; first 120 acres, then 80 acres. They moved from Tama to Mitchell County by train.
Found in the 1915 - 1920 censuses living at Burr Oak, Mitchell, Iowa:
1915: Henry J Ketelsen age 16.1920: August J Ketelsen 47, Annie Ketelsen 44, Henry Ketelsen 20, Wilma Ketelsen 19, Mary Ketelsen 17, Elmer Ketelsen 10, Lorraine Ketelsen 2 yrs 9 mos.
Henry worked for his parents until he got married to Ellen Dorothea Lundberg on November 14, 1923 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa. Then, he and Ellen rented a farm nearby. The farm had been run by an old bachelor and was a mess to clean up.
Found in the 1925, 1930 censuses at Burr Oak, Mitchell, Iowa:
1925: August Ketelson 52, Annie Ketelson 49, Hanry (Henry) Ketelson 26, Alma (Elmer) Ketelson 15, Lorraine Ketelson 7, Ellen Ketelson 20, Fern Ketelson 1.
1930: Henry Ketelsen 31, Ellen Ketelsen 25, Fern Ketelsen 5, Virginia Ketelsen 3.
He was baptized and confirmed at the Osage Lutheran Church on June 2, 1933.
Henry and Ellen had four daughters: Fern Ellen (1924-2004); Virginia Mae, Janet Marie and Carole Anne (1942-2002).
Henry was a member of the Farm Bureau and served on the Little Cedar School Board until it closed. At times he was the director of the country school. As a young man, as in later life, he was never ill. Only once was he in the hospital.
The next farm Henry and Ellen lived on was the Bill Markham farm one mile south of August's. This land had burr oak trees which were cut for firewood. Next, they moved to another farm south of Ketelsen's that was 320 acres and lived a number of years. Finally, they moved to Liberty township near Little Cedar.
Found in the 1940 census living at Liberty, Mitchell, Iowa: Henry Ketelsen 41, Ellen D Ketelsen 35, Fern E Ketelsen 15, Virginia M Ketelsen 13, Janet M Ketelsen 6.
He finally sold the farm and moved to Riceville, Iowa, to retire. He helped his son-in-law, Russell Bensend, until his health failed.
Henry and Ellen celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception at the Osage Farmers' Bank meeting room. It was hosted by their daughters and families.
Henry Jurgen Ketelsen died February 11, 1981 at Riceville, Mitchell, Iowa and is buried at the Osage City Cemetery, Osage, Mitchell, Iowa.
