Elizabeth (McIlravy) Bartlett – December 3, 1865 –June 5, 1955
DEATH CLAIMS LONG-TIME RICEVILLE RESIDENT
Mrs. Elizabeth Bartlett was born in Riceville, December 3, 1865. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David McIlravy, were pioneers, her father being a contractor, under whose direction many of the present building in this community were constructed.
She passed away, after a lengthy illness, at the home of her sister, Mrs. Grace Oliver, at Muscatine. She had reached the advanced age of 89 years and six months.
Mrs. Bartlett and her husband were united in marriage at the McIlravy home, August 16, 1893. Thus began a beautiful relationship which was to continue for nearly 60 years. One daughter, Lois, Mrs. Ralph Torney, blessed this union.
Mrs. Bartlett lived her entire life in Riceville, excepting the last three which were spent in Muscatine with her sister, Mrs. Oliver. She graduated from Riceville high school, later taking work at Iowa State Teachers College, where she trained for a career in teaching, following this work until her marriage.
She lived extensively in and out of her home. A long-time member of the Congregational church, she gave generously of her time to its program. She taught in the Sunday school and served as the church organist for years. She worked faithfully in the Golden Rule circle, continuing her loyal presence at the meetings long after her health would not permit her taking active part. She was a charter member of the Thimble club.
In her departure, Mrs. Bartlett leaves her daughter and son-in-law, Rocky Ford, Colorado, a granddaughter, Mrs. John Marks, and one great-grandson; her sister, Mrs. Grace Oliver, Muscatine; a brother, Frank McIlravy, Seattle, Washington; a brother, David McIlravy, Everett, Washington; four nieces and two nephews. Her parents and her husband, Charles Bartlett, her sisters, Mrs. A. J. Wood and Mrs. C. G. Potter, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the Loper Funeral Home, and at 2 o’clock at the Congregational church under the direction of Rev. Wm. G. Bohl and Rev. J. Priestley. Mrs. Duane Lockie sang “Beyond the Sunset, and “The Old Rugged Cross”, with Mrs. Hazel Farus at the piano. Pallbearers were Arthur Minis, Guy Swan, Harvey Stark, Lawrence Roe, Lyle Dinger and Clarence Kleckner. She was laid to rest beside her husband in Riverside cemetery.
Friends and relatives from out of town to attend the services included Miss Lucille Bartlett, Cedar Falls; Miss Mildred Potter, Minneapolis; Mrs. Faith Fields, Cresco; Dr. and Mrs. Ray Stover, Charles City; Mr. and Mrs. Orville Van Syoc, Waterloo; Mrs. And Mrs. Ralph Torney, Rock Ford, Colorado, and Mrs. Grace Oliver, Muscatine, who accompanied the body here.
