HERMAN STARR DIED SUNDAY MORNING
ILL MORE THAN YEAR

Herman Starr passed away at his home Sunday at 5 o’clock a.m. after a long illness. He had been a resident of Osage for 53 years. He had been confined to his home for six months. He owned Starr Bicycle Shop and sold the business to Leslie G. Hills a few months ago.

He was born 68 years ago in Omaha, Nebraska to William J. and Mary Ann Starr and moved to Jones County when he was 5 years old. They then moved to Osage when he was 15. His education was in the local public schools and the Cedar Valley Seminary.

In 1889 he went into business with his older brother, William. For years they operated an ice cream parlor and candy factory and bike shop. The sold the business 20 years ago and Herman started a machine and bike shop where the Goplerud Service Station now stands. Later he built a new building just west of the John Deere store.

He married Clara S Smalley who died on February 9, 1925.

Surviving him are daughters; Fern (Mrs. Guy L. Horton); Helen, teacher at Panama; Carol, teacher in Mason City Lois, at home.

He was a member of the Osage Baptist Church 46 years and was a deacon for 26 years. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock, officiated by Pastor John D. Kern. Burial was in the Osage Cemetery.
