Hovel Torstensen Hvatt​​um was born August 8, 1827 at Skjervum, Gran, Hadeland, Oppland, Norway to Mr & Mrs Torsten Haavelsen.

He mar​ried Rangdie Povels​datt​er (Paulsdatter) on April 7, 1856. Marriage record found in the Norwegian Digital Archives for Gran, Oppland, Norway, 1842-1856, page 1018, entry #33; Haavel Torstensen of Hvattum, age 28 yrs and Rangdie Paulsdatter of Skjervum age 21.

The couple had three children:
Kjersti Hovelsdatter (b August 19, 1856, mar Borger Flatla February 2, 1875 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa, d December 11, 1940);

Thorsten Hovelsen (b December 9, 1861, married Randi Halvorsdatter Lee January 9, 1908 RCLC, d October 16, 1934 Osage, Mitchell, Iowa) and

Paul Hovelsen (b May 25, 1865, d November 1, 1944 Mitchell Co, Iowa).

The family emigrated to Mitchell County, Iowa in the spring of 1868.

Found in the 1870 census living at Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa: Hoovd T Vettrum 40, Rougdena Vettrum 35, Christina Vettrum 14, Thomas Vettrum 9, Paul Vettrum 5.

Found in the 1880 - 1885 censuses at Rock, Mitchell, Iowa:
1880: H. T. Hvattam 56, Rangde Hvattam 45, Thorsten Hvattam 18, Paul Hvattam 15, Borger Larsen 36.

1885: Hovel T Hvattum 60, Rangdi Hvattum 50, Thorsten Hvattum 22, Paol Hvattum 19, Cora Insend 23.

Hovel T Hvattum died November 17, ​1892 at Roc​k township, Mitchell County, ​Iowa and was burie​d at the Rock Cr​eek Luther​an Cemetery​, Meroa, Ce​dar, Mitch​ell, Iowa.
