Helene Rosele Zilk, daughter of Charles and Matilda Kaven Zilk, was born on February 23, 1881 at the farm home near Riceville, Iowa. She attended rural school, later entering the Riceville high school, and was also a student at Cedar Valley Seminary, Osage, Iowa.

The earlier part of her teaching career was spent in rural and town schools, one year in the second grade in one of the buildings, where the high school now stands; the same year she enrolled in the Iowa State Teachers College, taking a two-year course in primary and one in kindergarten, graduating with the class of 1910 and began teaching in Mason City in the Garfield school. After nine years of service there, she resigned and went to California for a year's rest and a milder climate.

She enrolled in the University of Los Angeles, then she accepted a position and taught in Alhambra and various other schools. She returned to her home in Riceville in the summer of 1940. When school opened, she again accepted a post as teacher at a rural school in Wayne.

In school term, September 1942, she accepted a position as kindergarten teacher in the state school at Glenwood.

Miss Zilk united with the Riceville Congregational church on November 12, 1905. She was a member of the O.E.S., and was president for two years of the Alumni of Iowa State Teachers, who were students and teachers, resident in Los Angeles. Miss Zilk was a great reader and student, both in secular works and the Bible.

She became ill on her way home for Christmas vacation and was taken to the St. Catherine's hospital in Omaha, where she passed away on December 29, 1942.

She leaves three sisters -- Louise of Riceville; Mrs. Mary Bywater, of near David; Della Roche, of Riceville -- one brother, Henry C. Zilk of Torrington, Wyoming. One brother, Fred, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were conducted at the Riceville Congregational Church on January 1, 1943. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Riceville.
