Olaf A. Hanson
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Olaf A. Hanson passed away quietly on July 17, 2013, after a long battle with dementia. He is survived by his widow, Dorothy ("Dot"), his daughter Patricia Ann (Timothy) Hannon, and two grandsons, Sean Patrick and James Patrick (Sheelah).
He was born April 22, 1920, the son of Andrew and Kristina (Framstad) Hanson, in Mitchell County. He graduated from Plymouth High School and Midland Radio School in Kansas City. Ole worked for United Airlines and during World War II he served with United's Military Air Transport Command in the Pacific. When he retired with 42 years of service to United, he was the third most senior UAL employee.
Papa, as his grandchildren called him, liked working for United, but he really loved being retired. Olaf and Dot traveled extensively before retiring to the Villages, a retirement community in San Jose, Calif. At the Villages, they could enjoy their mutual passion for golf. Papa liked golf so much that he could even watch golf on television on a beautiful day and not get bored.
Ole was a long time conservative Republican. If you were conservative or Republican, you were all right in his mind . . . unless the GOP was backsliding into liberalism in his mind.
There was a special love in Olaf's heart for his rural beginnings. His inurnment will be at the cemetery at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Osage, where he was also baptized and confirmed in his youth.
Olaf was proud of his Norwegian heritage. He loved to eat lefse but absolutely refused to eat lutefisk. Even the Sons of Norway in Los Gatos, Calif. could not tempt him to go near lutefisk.
Papa had a great sense of humor even if it was at his expense. He will be missed by all.
