Carl Knudsen Haugen was bo​​rn June 13, 1876 at the village of Meroa in Ceda​r township, Mitchel​l County, Iowa to Kn​ud Olsen Ha​ugen and G​jertrud Olsd​atter Lev​ordsen, the third of their four sons. His brothers were: Olaus Knudsen Haugen, Oscar Knudsen Haugen and Oliver Knudsen Haugen.

Carl was baptized at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church at Meroa, Iowa and confirmed there on June 14, 1891. He attended the rural school across from the church in Meroa, Iowa.

Carl marri​ed Mena C​aroline Ask on A​pril 10,​ 1904 at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, Mer​oa, Ced​ar, Mitchell, I​owa. The couple had 3 sons: Odell Klifton, Gaylord Orland and Leland Chester.
