Death Was AccidentalSTACYVILLE, IOWA - The Mitchell County sheriff has ruled that John Joseph May, 17, of rural Stacyville died Saturday night from an accidental shooting at his farm home.
The youth died from a bullet fired from a .22 caliber automatic rifle being handled at Ihe time by his 20-year-old brother, Edward. They are the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard May of rural Stacyville.
According to Sheriff Richard Jahnel, the boys were in their bedroom. Edward was on a bed examining the newly purchased gun when it discharged.
According to Dr. L.A. Doyle, Osage, Mitchell County medical examiner, the bullet entered the victim's chest, cutting the aorta, and passing out of his back. He died outright.
Edward was taken to the Mitchell County' Hospital, where he is being treated for shock.
Funeral services for John May will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Visitation Catholic Church at Stacyville; burial in the Visitation Cemetery; rosaries at 3 p.m., 7:45 p.m, and 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Church Hall.
He is survived by his parents; four brothers: Robert of Stacyville, Gerard, Edward, and Mark, all at home; five sisters: Mrs. Dan (Rita) McCoy, Rochester, Minnesota, Mrs. John (Carol) Sullivan) of New Haven, Mrs. Tom (Ann) Wolf of Sheffield, Pamala, a University of Northern Iowa student at Cedar Falls, and Catherine, at home; his paternal grandfather, Henry May of Stacyville; and his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Bissen of Stacyville.
