St. Ansgar, Iowa — Thelma Kathlyn Eichman, 89, died on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at the St. Ansgar Good Samaritan Center.
Funeral service will be on Sunday, February 17, at 2 p.m. at the St. Ansgar United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Peter Chang officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.
Visitation scheduled for Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, and will also be held one hour prior to service at the church.
Thelma was born on May 14, 1923, in White, South Dakota, to Henry O. and Emma (Graves) Arends. She attended school in Brookings, South Dakota, moving to near Milford, Iowa, while in the fifth grade.
She married Fredric Eichman on September 4, 1944, in Milford. They began farming and continued until moving to St. Ansgar in 1962, when they became partners with Wayne and Dorothea Christofferson, publishing the St. Ansgar Enterprise, until Fred’s death on April 14, 1991. After raising five daughters, Thelma earned her GED at the age of 60.
Thelma was a member of the United Methodist Church, St. Ansgar, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school for several years, worked on many committees and was a member of the Morning Circle. She also was a member of the American Legion Auxillary in St. Ansgar.
Thelma had a love of the simple things: collecting shells, rocks, feathers and pine cones. Her love of nature was expressed in her gardening and flowers, as well as enjoying birds, squirrels and butterflies. She sewed, creating Halloween costumes, formals, professional and casual wear for all her girls.
She loved reading, crafts, art, creative writing, swimming, traveling and sitting through millions of ball games. She poured her time and energy into raising her girls, helping them discover their individualism. Thelma enjoyed making holidays special for her family. Family was her greatest love.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Emma; stepmother Florence; husband, Fredric; brothers, Ken and Russ Arends; sisters, Carlene and a baby; and stepbrother Lawrence Stykel.
