OTRANTO, IOWA - Probe underway for body of Otranto youth. Scuba divers arrived here from Mason City this morning to begin their search for the body of a 12-year old Otranto boy who is feared drowned after falling into the Cedar River about 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Mitchell County Sheriffs's officers said Alan Blake, son of Mrs. Peter Heintzman of Otranto, and Adrian Blake, Austin, fell into the river while attempting to walk across the dam. Sheriff's officials said they feared the Blake boy possibly struck his head on a rock.
Friends who were with Blake said the boy was an excellent swimmer, but failed to surface after falling into the water, causing them to seek help. The water in the area is about 20 feet deep. Volunteers and members of the Sheriff's Dept. began dragging operations about 5:45 p.m., but discontinued it about 10 p.m. after they failed to locate the boy.
Blake resides with his mother and stepfather in Otranto.
