NORTHWOOD, IOWA - Agnes Mildred Gordon, 86, Northwood, died on Saturday, December 29, 2012, at St. John's Lutheran Home in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Funeral services for Agnes will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 3, 2013, at the First Lutheran Church, 309 North Ninth Street, Northwood, with Pastor Judy Converse officiating. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, January 2, at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in Northwood.

Agnes Mildred Gordon was born on August 24, 1926, in Rock Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, the daughter of Melvin and Alma Sponheim. Agnes went to a country school during the first years of her life and then graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1944. She attended Iowa State University and graduated with a degree in home economics in 1948. Agnes taught home economics and art in the Ruthven and Garner School Districts for four years. She married Vernon Gordon on November 23, 1952, and three daughters were born: Barbara, Mary and Joyce.

Vernon and Agnes worked together on their farm. They raised hogs, corn and beans until their retirement in 1992 when they moved to Northwood.
Agnes was baptized, confirmed and married at First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. Agnes and Vernon attended Deer Creek Lutheran Church while they raised their family, and attended First Lutheran Church in Northwood during their retirement.

Agnes enjoyed gardening, sewing, spending time with friends and family, and helping her daughters and grandchildren with projects. She was an excellent cook who enjoyed being in the kitchen with food and company. She was an active participant in both churches, including being the leader for the Ladies' Aid and several circles and teaching Sunday School. Vernon and Agnes recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Vernon Gordon, of Northwood; daughters, Barbara Gordon of Clive, Iowa, Mary (Ian) Zach of Percival, Iowa, and Joyce (Doug) Tempus of Northwood; four grandchildren, Saraand Aaron Zach of Sidney, Iowa, and Laura and Tyler Tempus of Northwood; one great-granddaughter, Grace Zach of Sidney, Iowa; sister-in-­law, Dorothy Sponheim of St. Ansgar; two nephews, Dennis (Bunita) and Wayne (Anita) Sponheim of St. Ansgar; one niece, Dianne (Craig) Stange of Bismarck, North Dakota, and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Alma Sponheim, and brother, Harlan Sponheim; father-in-law and mother-in-law, M.L. (Luellyn) and Ada Gordon; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Laurel (Buzz) and Bev Gordon; and one nephew, Kenneth Gordon.
