Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 16, 1969 at the First Lutheran church, St. Ansgar, for Mrs. Josephine Schmidt, 81, who died at Memorial hospital, August 13. The services were in charge of Rev. Don Comnick.

Josephine Gunderson Schmidt, daughter of Erick and Louisa Helgeson Gunderson, was born on a farm near St. Ansgar June 7, 1888 and was baptized July 8, 1888 by Rev. John Olsen. She was confirmed June 1, 1902 by Rev. John Olsen.

She was a life-long member of the First Lutheran church of St. Ansgar, and was active in the Ladies Aid. She organized the Happy Hour Club of St. Ansgar, and the Progress Club, and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Jospehine received her education in the rural school, the Cedar Valley Seminary at Osage and at the State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She lived in St. Ansgar until 1942 when she moved to Fergus Falls, Minn. and lived there for several years where she was employed as a saleslady in various stores. She spent a year in Minneapolis and lived in Mason City for seven years before coming to Osage to live in 1957.

Mrs. Schmidt was preceded in death by her mother and father, five sisters and four brothers.

She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Emma Haberkorn and by nieces and nephews.

Burial was in First Lutheran Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

MRS. JOSEPHINE SCHMIDT

ST.ANSGAR - Services for Mrs. Josephine Schmidt, 81, who died Wednesday at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Emma Haberkorn of Osage; nieces and nephews.

Schroeder and Houg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Genia Josephine (Jenny) Gunderson was born June 7, 1888 at Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa to Erik Gundersen and Louisa Gunhilda Helgeson, the tenth of their eleven children.

Found in the 1888 - 1900 censuses at Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa:
1895: Genia Josephine Gunderson age 6. 1900: Erik Gunderson 57, Ragnild Gunderson 48, C Gustavus Gunderson 24, Levie G Gunderson 20, Maria E Gunderson 16, Emma H Gunderson 13, Jenny J Gunderson 11, Olavus Thorson 29.

She married Albert Ferdinand Schmidt on October 6, 1915 at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa; the couple had no children.

Found in the 1915 - 1930 censuses at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa:
1920: Albert Schmidt 32, Josephine Schmidt 31, Emma Gunderson 33, Emma Torgerson 46, Mabel Redalen 21.
1925: Albert F Schmidt 37, Mrs. Josephine Schmidt 36.
1930: Albert Schmidt 42, Josephine Schmidt 41, Emma Torgerson 57.

They divorced 1949.

Genia died August 13, 1969 at Osage, Mitchell, Iowa and is buried at the First Lutheran Cemetery, St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa.
