Obituary:

Burton R. Whisler of Centralia, Washington (1978-present), Newport, Rhode Island (1964-1978), and LeRoy, Minnesota, (pre-1964) died peacefully at the age of 83 at his home on July 16, 2010.

Burton was born to James Claude (J. C.) and Ora (Bain) Whisler in Riceville, Iowa, on August 30, 1926, and was the youngest of ten children.

He leaves behind his wife, Leola (Roper) Whisler of Centralia, Washington; children, Burt Whisler of Centralia, Washington, Bruce Whisler of Centralia, Washington, Debbie (Nick) Piraino of Herriman, Utah, Pam (David) Ferris of North Highlands, California, Sondra (Taron) Hahn of Rochester, Washington and Rose Marie Frettoloso of Nocona, Texas; grandchildren, Keri (Piraino) LeMay, Michael Piraino, Anna Piraino, Kyle Ferris, Jameson Ferris, Carlin Whisler, Hunter Hahn, Owen Hahn; siblings, Dorothy Wallingford of Citrus Heights, California, and Fern Clark of Marion, Iowa.

Burton attended school in LeRoy, Minnesota, and he and Leola were married in 1956. His early years consisted of working on the family farm, delivering milk, and driving produce in Washington State. In addition, he worked for a time on the Hungry Horse Dam in Montana and served in the US Army Air Corps from March 27, 1946 to October 27, 1947. He later made a living as a carpenter/handyman refurbishing homes in Newport, Rhode Island.

Burton enjoyed his grandchildren, carpentry (and sharing that knowledge with others), gardening (and sharing the fruits of his labor), traveling (he could drive like no one’s business), visiting relatives, reading, history, admiring antique farm equipment, and watching NASCAR. His generous and giving nature extended to everyone he knew, always helping and looking out for them.

Remembrance suggestion: donation in Burton’s name to the Make a Wish Foundation (www.wish.org/help/donate) or to the children’s charity of your choice.
