John Fey, brewer in West Mitchell, was born in Germany, February 11, 1841.

In 1852 his parents emigrated to Jefferson Co., Wisconsin, where John grew to man's estate. He followed farming and threshing until 1869, when he came to Rock Township, Mitchell County, where he followed farm life till 1874, when he purchased the West Mitchell Brewery, in which business he was still engaged in 1883.

In politics he is a democrat and held nearly all the township offices in Rock township, while a resident there. He is a member of the German Lutheran Church.

He was married in December, 1860. They were the parents of eight children — Eva E., born June 29, 1861; Theresa A. M., born October 9, 1863; Henry J.M., born February 4, 1866; Frank C., born November 1, 1868; Magdalena M.M., born March 19, 1871; Frederick H. J., born April 4, 1875; Almiene A.H., born August 1, 1880; John A., born March 24, 1883.

Mr. Fey's father was killed in Wisconsin by a falling tree, in February, 1855*. In a few years his widow married Ernest Thiede. She died of typhoid fever in the fall of 1868.

The West Mitchell Brewery was built in 1858 by Frank Coap, who ran it till 1861, when he enlisted in the Civil war cause as a Union soldier, and let his brewery stand idle. Subsequently this brewery was in the hands of William and John Wall, but later became the property of John Fey, who, in 1876, added to it largely. He increased the capacity to 1,800 barrels of beer annually. But changes in business, from small towns to large city centers, together with the growing disapproval of the use of all kinds of alcoholic drinks, caused the brewing interests to be suspended forever in West Mitchell.

**Note: The accidental death of John's father may have been 1858. The material was OCR'd with the date shown as 185.S. An "S" was also placed in the death year for his son, John (1S83) which could be assumed it should be 1883 because of the other children. It's unsure what the OCR intended for his father.
