Melvin George Schroeder was born on 3 NOV 1918, the son of Oscar and Frieda Schroeder. He died at the age of 24, on 27 NOV 1942; at sea, during World War II.

Man Is DrownedST. ANSGAR, IOWA — Word was received from the navy department late Monday by Mr. and Mrs. O. G. Schroeder that their son, Melvin, 24, had lost his life by drowning. Melvin enlisted in the naval reserve and received his training as a specialist at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station, and up to a few months ago was stationed at San Diego, California.
He was graduated from the local high school and attended Carleton College at Northfield, Minnesota, before his enlistment.

Among MissingTwo more northeast Iowans have given their lives in the nation's service and one is listed as missing.
Melvin G. Schroeder, 24, seaman first class, is among the nine Iowans listed as dead in the navy department casulty list issued Saturday covering the period from November 16, to November 30.
The same list reported Pvt. Dale M. Brandhaw of Dunkerton, of the United States Marine Corps, as missing. He is the son of Charles L. Bradshaw of Dunkerton.
Dies in South Pacific.
The second Iowan to die was Donald Carpenter, 23, Earlville, who died November 27 of wounds suffered in the South pacific, according to work received by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Carpenter, of Earlville.MEMORIAL SERVICE
Memorial services for Schroeder will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Immanuel Lutheran Church under direction of Reverend Paul Brammer, assisted by members of the American Legion post of St. Ansgar.
Mr. and Mrs. Schroeder have one other son, Junior, home on furlough to attend the rites.
