IN PLANE ATTACK

ARTHUR SCHMIDT OFFICIALLY DEAD;
PLANE WAS SHOT
DOWN NOV. 26, 1944

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schmidt of Mitchell have received official notification from the war department, stating that their son, Arthur, is declared officially dead. Schmidt, a staff sergeant, was a waist gunner in the army air corps.

The Mitchell gunner's plane was reported shot down over Hamburg, Germany, November 26, 1944. The crippled plane sent a radio message that the crew hoped to land the ship in northern Holland. no further details were available but it has been learned that the bombardier and the co-pilot were saved.

S. Sgt. Schmidt is survived by his parents and seven brothers and sisters. They are: Earl, Lawrence, Edward, and Mabel Schmidt, all of Osage; Chief Petty Officer Alfred Schmidt, of Chicago, Illinois; Cpl. Alvin Schmidt, in Hawaii; and Cpl. Clifford Schmidt, of Dublin, Georgia.

Three other Mitchell boys have lost their lives in the war. They are Eddie Nemeth, Leo [SIC] Aricks, and Ralph Turner.
