Ernest Isaac Jr. “Butch” Parr – September 10, 1922 – January 1, 2004

BUTCH PARR DIES IN SACRAMENTO, CAL., AT THE AGE OF 81

Ernest Junior (Butch) Parr was born September 10, 1922 in Osage, Iowa. He attended Osage High School where he loved the game of baseball. Butch was a pitcher, his brother Kenny was the catcher and his father Ike was the umpire.

Butch enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1942 after graduation. He said he ended up in the Coast Guard because the rest of the services had their quotas. His son Michael always dubbed him the 6' Sailor. Butch spent the majority of his time in San Diego at the Point Loma Coast Guard base.

He was honorably discharged from the Coast Guard in October 1945, and returned to Riceville and went to work for his in-laws, Sam and Emma Willner at Willner's Grocery. Butch then became a rural mail carrier in Riceville.

Interestingly, his route and his dad's Osage route overlapped and they often saw each other.

After retiring from the Post Office, he and Bette became "snow birds", living in Arizona during the winter. They moved to Sacramento, Calif., where they resided in a trailer park, where his wife, Bette, still resides.

Butch was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and a few years later he went to the Green Haven Country Place in Sacramento, where he resided until his death.

At his request, no funeral will be held and his ashes will be buried in the family plot at Riverside Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Riceville Rest Home in Butch's honor.

Butch is survived by his wife, Bette (Willner) Parr, of 61years; son Michael, both residing in Sacramento; two sisters, Bette and Virginia, both in Minnesota.

Butch was preceded in death by his parents, Ike and Jesse Parr of Osage, and his son Edward Parr of Riceville, and his brother Kenny, who resided in Illinois.

Riceville Recorder, Riceville, Iowa, Thursday January 29, 2004
