Last Friday, as train No. 15, on the Branch, was about a mile above Osage, an aged deaf man named J. W. Butterick, who was walking on tho track with his back toward the train, was struck and fearfully mangled, his left leg shattered and a portion of his skull broken. He was taken to Osage, but his injuries were of such a character that there was little hope of his ever recovering.

The man was returning from a visit to a daughter, a few miles from Osage, and took the railroad track as the nearest way home. When it was seen that he did not notice the train, every exertion was used to stop it, which was almost successful, as the rate of speed was very slow when he was struck.

No blame can attach to any of the trainmen, as they used every endeavor to prevent the accident.
