Maren Torine Ask was born at Norderhov, Buskerud, Norway to Lars Trulsen Ask and Toline Olsdatter. Maren was the oldest of their seven children. Her siblings were: Ole Larsen Trulsen Ask; Annie Christine, Andrew, Karine, Anton and Lise. (all used several variations of their first names and changed surnames from Trulsen to Ask, many of their obituaries can be found at this website).

Lars, wife Tolline and their two oldest children, Maren Torine and Ole Larsen emigrated to Rock Prairie, Wisconsin in 1851. Two years later, in the spring of 1853, they moved to Lookingglass Prairie, MN. Family found in the 1865 census living at Highland Prairie, Fillmore, Minnesota: Lars Trulsen, Tolline Trulsen, Marie, Ole, Andreas, Anton, Ann, Karen, Lise.

Maren married Ole (the Younger) Rustand Haugerud on November 27, 1865 at the Highland Prairie Lutheran Church, Fillmore, Minnesota. The couple moved to Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa and lived on the farm "Haugerud" directly south of the Rock Creek Lutheran Church.

Children born at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa were:
Laura Olivia (born September 9, 1867);
George Theodore Rustand (born July 1869);
Martin Otto Rustand (born June 1871);
Allette Karoline (born September 10, 1873);
Mathilda May (born May 18, 1875) and
Annette Otilia (born May 14, 1877).

Family found in the 1870 census living at Meroa, Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa: Ole Hougerud 36, Mary Hougerud 24, Laura Hougerud 3, George Hougerud 1, Betsey Larsen 25 (household helper), Iver Ellingson 20 (farmland help).

In March of 1879, Ole sold his farm in Meroa to Knud Haugen and the family moved to Dakota Territory (near Grafton, North Dakota) to homestead land.

Family found in the 1880 census living at Drayton, Pembina, Dakota Territory: Ole O. Haugerud 46, Mary Haugerud 33, Laura Haugerud 12, George Haugerud 10, Matilda Haugerud 5, Annetta Haugerud 3, Tolef Johnson 27.

Children born while living here:
Otto (born June 1881, died February 1946 Melfort, Saskatchewan, Canada);
Alfred Edward (born April 22, 1883 Tagus, Walsh, North Dakota);
Ida (born December 1885. doed October 14, 1985 Saskatchewan, Canada) and
Milliard Benoney (born August 13, 1894 August 13, 1894).

After twenty years in North Dakota, the family moved in 1899 to Wisconsin.

Found in the 1900 census at Brannon, Price, Wisconsin farming: Ole O Haugerud 64, Maren Haugerud 53, George Haugerud 29, Mathilda Haugerud 24, Otto Haugerud 18, Alfred Haugerud 17, Ida Haugerud 14, Milliard Haugerud 5.

In 1903, the family left Wisconsin and emigrated to Bagley, Saskatchewan, Canada.

Maren's spouse, Ole the Younger Rustand Haugerud, died November 7, 1915.

Find her in the 1916 census living at Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada: Mary Haugerud 70; Widowed; Birth Year: 1846; Birthplace: Norway; Year of immigration: 1903; Home in 1916: 21, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan Address: 46, 18, 2, Willow Creek; Self Sub District Desc.: Townships 46 and 47, ranges 17, 18 and 19, W. 2.

Maren Torine Ask Haugerud died in 1928 at Saskatchewan, Canada and is buried there.

Contributor's note: Censuses transcribed as found without correcting obvious spelling errors. Although Maren is not buried in Mitchell County, her connections to the county are many as her parents and siblings are buried here.
