OBITUARY OF GEORGE
W. HYDE, WHO DIED
IN LONG BEACH, CAL.George W. Hyde, of Mitchell, passed away in Long Beach, California, Sunday, February 10, 1924, after lingering for one week following a stroke the preceding Sunday. Burial was at Long Beach.
George W. Hyde was one of the pioneers of Mitchell county and descended from a long line of pioneers. His ancestor, the first William Hyde, came from England in 1633, and was one of the founders of Hartford, Conn. In 1660, with 35 other families they removed from Hartford, and established the town of Norwich, Conn., which was the family home for many years. Several of the family fought in the Revolutionary War. His grandfather fought in the War of 1812 and was a pioneer in western New York.
George W. Hyde was born in Oneida county, N.Y., September 12, 1839. In 1853 he came west with his father, William Hyde, and the family settled in the town of Floyd.
January 1, 1863 he married Jane Lane, daughter of Daniel and Ellen Lane, pioneers of Mitchell county, Iowa. The ceremony was performed by Judge Clyde, father of Judge J. F. Clyde. Jane Lane-Hyde died on September 7, 1914.
To this marriage were born six children, five of whom are living. Mr. Hyde lived in Mitchell county abut sixty years and for the past three years in Long Beach. He was a contractor in the early days, in partnership with his father. They built some of the first bridges across the Cedar river and many of the best buildings in Floyd and Mitchell counties.
