Colburn Hanson Rust, second son of Hans and Ingeborg Rust, was born in Gol, Hallingdal, Norway, March 10, 1837. On April 8 he was baptized in the Gol Parish church.

In the spring of 1852 he, with his parents, brothers and sisters, imigrated to America, going to Rock Prairie, Wisconsin, where they resided one year. At this settlement he was confirmed by the Rev. Clausen at the age of 15 years.

In the month of June, 1853, they joined the Clausen Colony and moved to St. Ansgar, Iowa. Their long journey westward was made in covered wagons, drawn by oxen. Having arrived here the Rust family chose their homestead, 3 miles north of St. Ansgar, where they built their first log cabin.

The year 1864 the pioneers, including Colburn Rust, erected the stone church which still stands as a tribute to those early settlers.

On June 3, 1873, at Davis, Illinois, he was married to Gunvor Thompson. This union was blessed with six children. Of these the first-born died in infancy and one son, Gilbert Oscar passed away August 30, 1908, at the age of 27 years. The following, with their mother, survive; Henry E. of St. Ansgar, Iowa, George C. of Marion, N.D., Mrs. Blanche Hansen and Halvor O. Hanson, both of St. Ansgar, Iowa.

Colburn Rust lived on the old Rust homestead continuously for 59 years. In the spring of 1922 he, with his wife, moved to St. Ansgar, purchased the Rev. Olsen parsonage. Here they celerated their golden wedding anniversary June 3, 1923. However, his health had been failing and, after 9 years of confinement, his weakened body was an easy prey to bronchia pneumonia, from which he died on the morning of May 5, 1926, having attained the age of 89 years, 1 month and 24 days.

Throughout his long illness he was patient and always thoughtful of his dear ones, and his deep faith in his Redeemer was so often manifested by his earnest prayers that his dear Savior would soon come to take him to his Heavenly Home.

Besides his aged wife, who has so faithfully cared for him throughout his long illness, he leaves to morn his loss his four children, ten grandchildren, one brother, Olaus Rust, and numerous other relatives.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the N.E. Lutheran church, Rev. M.E. Waldeland taking for his text II Timothy 4:6. Mr. William Groth sang two of Mr. Rust's favorite hymns and the Junior Choir sang "In the Garden."

A host of friends and relatives came to pay their last respects to this venerable old pioneer, who had lived in this locality for so many years. He was laid to rest in the N.E. Lutheran cemetery north of town.
