James Burr Johnson, son of Augustus and Amanda Johnson, was born June 17, 1840 at Charter Grove, DeKalb County, Illinois, and died at his home near Riceville, Howard County, Iowa February 18, 1917, at 5:45p.m. being in the 77th year of his age.
Mr. Johnson came to Iowa, when he was about 25 years of age and lived in this state and in the vicinity of Riceville for most part ever since.
He was united in marriage to Mary Briggs May 12, 1870. To this union four children were born, two boys and two girls, Clarence of Bowman, North Dakota, Mrs. Susie Geithman of Genoa, Illinois and Mrs. Cora Dano of Pequot Lakes, Minnesota and Ransome of Riceville, Iowa.
Two of Mr. Johnson's brothers, Chauncey Johnson and Frank McEnroy (McInroy) reside here. A sister, Mrs. Heffman, resides at Central City, Iowa and a half sister, Mary Jones, lives in Greenfield, Missouri.
The deceased was a soldier in the Civil War being a private in Company 132nd Illinois regiment, volunteer infantry. He enlisted in 1863 and was mustered out in 1865. He was a very industrious and honest man, being of kind heart he was ever ready to help the need and had a good will toward all.
Interment is in Riceville Cemetery
