RICEVILLE MAN SHOOTS SELF
USED STICK TO DISCHARGE GUN HE FASTENED IN VISERiceville – Carl Haynes, farmer residing two miles north and two miles west of Riceville, committed suicide at his farm workshop Thursday by shooting, according to Coroner John Eil.
A shotgun was used by Mrs. Haynes, the gun being fastened in a vise and set off by a stick about four feet long. The shot entered the chest.
Surviving Mrs. Haynes are his wife and two married daughters and one son. The shooting was believed to have occurred about 11 o’clock in the morning. Haynes was about 50 years of age.

WWI Draft Registration; shows Carl Haynes as being born June 2, 1885, and at that time he was living in Tama, Powesheik, Iowa. He was the son of William Thomas Haynes and Mary (Anthoney) Haynes. He married Lucy Zak, the daughter of John and Anna Zak.
