OSAGE, IOWA - Vernon G. Amundson, age 85, of Osage, died Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at Faith Home Assisted Living in Osage.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 25, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Avenue, Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.
Vernon was born November 22, 1926, near Osage, the son of Adolph and Gustava (Erikson) Amundson. He graduated from Osage High School and then served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in Japan.After returning from the service, he attended Hamilton Business School. He then worked for Western Union as a relief office manager in the Midwest and as an office manager in the Omaha office. After his retirement, Vernon moved back to Osage. He was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W. Vernon was an avid collector of antiques.
Vernon is survived by nieces and nephews, Edna (Marvin) Norby of Osage, Gary (Lavonne) Cockrum of Osage, Patricia (Ron) Thompson of Waterloo, Jim (Lodema) Cockrum of Osage, Mary (Keith) Lugg of Casper, Wyoming, Connie (Ken) Eagen of Osage, Alice (Charles) Olswold of Muscatine, and Dean (Lu Ann) Cockrum of Osage, and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alvin and Hilmer Amundson; two sisters, Marian Cockrum and Alice Nack; and two nieces, Norma Jean Olson and Arla Wherry.
