DIED: WOODWARD - AT WEST MITCHELL, APRIL 12TH, 1877, F. S. WOODWARD, AGED 46 YEARS, 5 MONTHS, AND 20 DAYS
F.S. Woodward was born in Oswego Co., N.Y. in 1831 and removed to Wis. with his parents, in 1842. At the age of nineteen he went to California and remained there five years, returning to Wis. in 1855, where he remained for nearly two years. He then removed to Minn. near St. Paul and engaged in farming. At the breaking out of the War in 1861 he enlisted in the 4th Minn., and served until honorable discharge in 1864. During his army life, he contracted chronic diarrhea, which nearly cost him his life. He continued to reside in Minn. until 1873, when he came to St. Ansgar, Iowa, and engaged in the mercantile business with his brother C.A. Woodward. Owing to a lung difficulty, with rapid hemmorhages, his health failed and he sought a warmer and milder climate at Little Rock, Ark. For a time his health seemed to improve but at last commenced failing and he returned to Iowa, April 10th, stopping at Mitchell, at his sisters, Mrs. Sweatt. The fatigueing journey and the fatal character of his disease proved too much for his already weakened system and he expired April 12th, 1877.
As a man and a citizen he stood high in this community and his many friends will deeply regret his decease. He leaves a family of three sons one of which is at his father-in-laws in Wis., the others are in this place at his brothers. His wife died over two years since, and they are now doubtless enjoying each others society in the SummerLand.
