MILITARY SERVICES HELD WED. FOR GENE MERLIN RUST
Funeral services were conducted at the home and at the Methodist church for Gene Rust. Rev. E.E. Pencook had charge of the service with Rev. W.F. Belling, Charles City, former pastor of the St. Ansgar Methodist church, delivering the message.
Gene Merlin Rust, son of Mr. Gilman C. Rust and his wife, Myrtle, was born May 4, 1921 near St. Ansgar, Iowa, and passed away April 17, 1949 at the age of 27 years, 11 months and 12 days. His entire life was spent on the parental farm home north of St. Ansgar, with the exception of a little over two months he spent in the service of the armed forces of his country. He entered the service on September 5, 1942 and after receiving his training at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, was given an honorable discharge on November 17, 1942. From the time of his discharge from the army, he has been suffering a slow paralysis. his health has failed quite rapidly this past year and he passed away at 1 a.m. April 17 at the Savre hospital in Osage. Direct cause of death was pneumonia.
Gene was baptized on May 23, 1921 as an infant and placed on the preparatory roll. He became a full member of the St. Ansgar Methodist Church in 1935 under the pastorate of M.W. McKinley. In recent years it has not been possible for Gene to attend the public worship services of his church, but he has made it a practice to listen to one service after another on Sunday morning by means of radio. He also enjoyed reading a great deal.
Gene received his education at the St. Ansgar schools and was graduated with the class of 1938. While in school he was active in school activities, especially interested in declamotory work. Since his school days he has been helping his father on their farm and just one week before his passing he was assisting his father with oats seeding. He displayed unusual courage and refused to give up even though the odds of physical recovery were against him.
Gene is survived by his parents, one sister, Kathryn (Mrs. Vallejo Bullis) of St. Ansgar; one brother, Allan, at home; one nephew; the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Betsy Rust of St. Ansgar; a number of cousins and many friends and neighbors. One brother, Charles preceded him in death, having died in November of 1938 as a result of an auto accident.
Burial was in the First Lutheran Cemetery.

ST. ANSGAR -- Funeral services for Gene Rust, 27, were held at the farm home and the Methodist church on Wednesday afternoon. He died of pneumonia early Sunday at a hospital in Osage.
Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gilman Rust, a sister, Mrs. Vallejo Bullis, a brother, Alan, and a grandmother, Mrs. Betsy Rust.
He wa a graduate of the St. Ansgar high school with the class of 1938, then worked on the home farm. He entered the military service during World War II and trained for a short time at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was discharged.

DIED SUNDAY AFTER
LINGERING ILLNESS
Funeral services for Gene Rust, 28, of St. Ansgar were held on Wednesday afternoon, April 20, at the farm home and at the St. Ansgar Methodist church. Rev. W. F. Belling of Charles City officiated, assisted by the Rev. E. Pencook, and burial was made in the St. Ansgar Cemetery.
Mr. Rust died Sunday morning at the Savre hospital in Osage. He had been in failing health for some time.
Gene Rust, son of Gilman and Myrtle Rust, was born on the home farm north of St. Ansgar on May 4, 1921. He was baptized May 23, 1921, at Osage. He lived with his parents on the farm his entire life.
He attended the St. Ansgar schools and graduated from the St. Ansgar high school with the class of 1938. He was quite active in school work, especially in declamatory work.
He loved to read and listen to the radio and also enjoyed driving the tractor and helping with the farm work. He was a member of the St. Ansgar Methodist Church, but because of failing helath, he had to listen to the church services on the radio at home.
On September 5, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army. He received his training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and was discharged on November 17, 1942. Since his discharge he suffered a paralysis. They sought help for his illness in South Dakota, Rochester, and Hines hospital in Chicago, but the past year his health failed rapidly.
Friday he was taken ill and was taken to Savre hospital in Osage where he died on Easter Sunday morning at one o'clock. Direct cause of his death was pneumonia.
He is survived by his parents, one sister, Mrs. Vallejo (Kathryn) Bullis, and one brother, Allen, at home. One brother preceded him in death, on November 14, 1938. His grandmother, Mrs. Betsy Rust of St. Ansgar, and one nephew also survive.
