GILLES, JOHN AND KATHERINA

John Gilles was born September 29, 1856 at Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin, the son of Nicholas and Mary (Weber) Gilles who emigrated to America from Koblenz, Germany in the middle 1850's and settled at Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin. John was one of thirteen children born to them.
John was married on June 13, 1876 to Katherina Hartogh, the daughter of Barnard and Agnes (Braun) Hartogh. About 1878 they came to the New Haven, Iowa area and settled in Douglas Township, Mitchell County where they were engaged in farming.
They had ten children: Mary, Joseph, Matthew, Anna, Herman, Elizabeth, William, Bernard, Roy and Winnefred.
John and Katherina were lifelong members of St. Peters Catholic Church in New Haven, Iowa. John died December 14, 1904 and Katherina died November 23, 1906. Both are buried in St. Peters Cemetery at New Haven, Iowa.
