MRS. NELLIE BRAINARD, WIDOW OF PHYSICIAN, DIES; FUNERAL MONDAY

Osage – Funeral service was held at the Champion Funeral home Monday morning for a former resident of Osage.

Nellie Shattuck Brainard, 89, died at the home of her daughter at Mt. Pleasant, Michigan, Thursday. In charge of the service was the Rev. Stiles Lessly, Congregational Pastor. Burial was in the family lot in the Osage Cemetery.

Nellie Shattuck, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Jonathan Shattuck, was born at Brookline, New Hampshire, August 6, 1865. She accompanied her parents, as a young girl, to Zumbrota, Minnesota, where she was married in 1876 to Dr. Dudley Brainard, well known pioneer physician in Mitchell County. He died in 1893, having served Mitchell County in the Stacyville Community for 14 years and at Osage for 3 years.

Following the death of her husband, she remained in Osage for 16 years, then she made her home with her son, Dudley, in Minnesota, for several years. She died at the home of her daughter at Mt. Pleasant.

Surviving are her 2 children; Mrs. Harold Powers, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan; her son, Dudley, president of the State Teachers College, St. Cloud, Minnesota; 10 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Two of her grandchildren have become famous—Dudley Powers, first cellist for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and for several years an instructor at Northwestern University; and Dorotha Powers, famous concert violinist, now at Long Island, New York.
