OSAGE, IOWA - Olive Eleanor (Motland) Gaarder, 82, of Osage, died Sunday, January 1, 2012, at Polk City Nursing and Rehab in Polk City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, January 6, 2012, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage, with the Rev. Roy Ott and the Rev. Stephen Bohling officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

Olive was born March 28, 1929, at Osage, Iowa, the daughter of Thelman and Christine (Nodland) Motland. She was baptized and confirmed at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, rural Meroa, Iowa. Olive graduated in 1946 from Osage High School.

She was married to Norman Gaarder on August 10, 1947, at the Osage Lutheran Church in a double wedding ceremony with her sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Johnny Kurina.

Olive and Norman had two sons, Dennis and Barry Gaarder. Olive was a farm housewife, cleaned houses, worked at Osage Drug Store, and was a bookkeeper at Jorde Motors. She also worked as a cook at Osage Community Schools and the Faith Home. Olive was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She loved music and loved to sing. Olive and her sister, Evelyn, sang many duets together in high school and at various functions around Osage for many years. She also sang in the high school chorus, glee club and in church choir. Olive also enjoyed going to and having rummage and garage sales, and traveling to various events with her special friend, Ben Bauman.

Survivors include her son, Barry Gaarder of Marshaltown; sisters, Angeline Denning and Evelyn (Johnny) Kurina, all of Seattle, Washington; Jeannie (Kenneth) Moss of Rochester, Minn., and Betty (Charles) Johnson, of Osage; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Motland of Osage, and Grace Motland of Seattle, Washington; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Ben Bauman of Osage.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Norman Gaarder in 1981; her son, Dennis Gaarder in 1981; sister and brother-in-law, Laurine and Lloyd Olson; brothers, Leonard and Russell Motland, and brother-in-law, Robert Denning.
