CHARLES CITY - Vernon F. "Bun" Regan, 74, a resident of 1429 Gil Ave., died Monday afternoon (April 28, 1997) at his home of cancer.
A funeral Mass for "Bun" Regan will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, with Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Friends may call from noon to 9 p.m. today at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main St., with a 3 p.m. rosary by St. Mary's Circle; a Vigil Scriptural Wake Service at 7:30 p.m., followed by a recitation of the Rosary by the Knights of Columbus. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass on Thursday at the church.
Vernon Francis "Bun" Regan was born Sept. 7, 1922, in Howard County, the son of Francis D. and Martha Dettmer Regan.
He enjoyed growing up in the country surrounding Riceville. As a teen-ager during the depression years, he learned to make the best of life including his favorite dessert peanut butter on white bread turned over and topped with milk, sugar and applesauce.
"Bun" graduated from Riceville High School in 1939.
He served in World War II as a member of the 17th and 82nd Airborne Divisions in the European Theater.
On April 27, 1946, he and Elizabeth "Betty" Sullivan [born 1924] were married in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma.
"Bun" will be remembered by many people in the Charles City area as the Fuller Brush Man. In this family venture, "Bun" and his wife raised five children, who have many fond (and not-so-fond) memories of the Fuller Brush days. He later worked for American Cyanamid and Harvestore Systems.
After retiring in 1983, he spent his days refinishing furniture, grooming his lawn, traveling, playing cards and helping his children with their many home projects.
But his favorite pastime was fishing. His fishing boat, the "Queen Betty," was the source of many happy hours. "Bun" was also a member of the River City Barbershop Chorus for 15 years, Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.
He was Grandpa Bun to 15 grandchildren, all of whom loved him dearly. He was always ready to play ball, play cards, sing, take them fishing, eat ice cream, or just talk. A kinder grandpa they couldn't imagine.
Living family members include his wife, Betty of Charles City; two sons and their wives, Pat and Sharon Regan of Nora Springs, and Tom "Zip" Regan of Lena, Illinois; and three daughters
and their husbands, Jeanne and Jerry Zwald of Garner; Gail and Steve Castle of Warrensville, Illinois, and Joyce Staebell of Cedar Falls; a brother, Jim Regan of Indianapolis, Indiana; and two sisters, Dorothy Lockie of Prescott Valley, Arizona, and Judy Shea of Manhattan, Kansas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Katie Jones.
Memorials may be directed to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or the Heart to Home Hospice, both of Charles City.
