JEWELL MELLEM,
OSAGE EDUCATOR,
DIED MONDAY

Longtime Osage educator Jewell D. Mellem, 53, died Monday morning at the Mitchell County Memorial Hospital.

Funeral services will be today (Wednesday) March 31, at 1:30 PM at our Saviors Lutheran Church in Osage. The Rev. Joseph Nesheim and the Rev. Harold Larson will also officiate at the service and burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Northwood. There will be military rights held at the graveside by the American Legion Post 278. Champion Funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Jewell Mellem was born September 13, 1928, at Northwood to Hartwick and Fern (Harmon) Mellem. He graduated from the Northwood High School. He received his BA. A. Degree from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls in 1950, his master's degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder in 1958, and continuing his education at the University at Eugene, Oregon.

On June 5, 1954, he married Donna Billings at Mason City. They have been residents of Osage for the past 27 years. Mellem started his teaching career at New London, Iowa, where he taught or the 1953 – 54 school year. He came to Osage in 1954 to teach sixth grade which he did for six years. He has been the principle of Lincoln Elementary School in Osage for the past 21 years and has served as principal of Washington, New Central and Mitchell elementary schools during that time. He was a member of the American Legion.

Mellem is survived by his wife, Donna, of Osage; his mother, Mrs. Fern Mellem, of Northwood; and one sister Judy Boutelle, of Salem Oregon.
