Funeral services were held on Saturday, June 14, 1986 at Hage Funeral Home in Charles City for Clarkson Lee Kelly, Sr., 87, of Charles City, and formerly of Osage, Riceville and Coretz, Colorado. Mr. Kelly died on Tuesday, June 10, 1986 at a Charles City nursing home where he had been a patient since September 21, 1985. Rev. F. Moore, pastor of the First Congregational Church officiated, and burial was in the Riverside Cemetery in Riceville. Military rites were conducted by the American Legion Post of Riceville.
Clarkson Kelly was born on April 20, 1899 at Cortez, Colorado, to Walter Lee and Ann (Brittain) Kelly. He received his education in schools at Mancos, Colorado. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in France during World War I. After his service, he moved to Colorado, then to Red Oak, Iowa, and began working in a restaurant in Riceville and then later operated the Main Street Coffee Shop in Osage. He later owned and operated the former Club Iowa in Charles City.
He was a lifelong member of the American Legion and Veteran's of Foreign Wars in Charles City and the American Legion in Riceville. He founded the American Legion Post in Cortez, Colorado.
His wife, Marian, died in 1970. On June 29, 1973, he married Gloria Schroeder in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Molly; and an infant son.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria; four sons, Dr. Clarkson Kelly of Charles City, Dr. Thomas Kelly of Des Moines, Dr. James Kelly of Boise, Idaho, and Dr. William Kelly of Waterloo; one sister, Mrs. Minnie Hammond, and one brother, Freed Kelly, both of Cortez, Colorado; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
