OBITUARY
Dr. D. W. Blackman was born in Bridgewater, New York, January 1823, and was called to his last resting place on last Saturday, from the Mrs. Slawson home on west Main Street. He received his education from the Hamilton Academy and the medical department of the New York State University, from which institution he graduated in 1848. Immediately the young doctor came west and located in Rock county, Wisconsin, where he practiced nineteen years, coming to Mitchell county in the fall of 1866.
For many years previous to his removal he was an honored practitioner and business man of Mitchell, removing to Osage about ten years ago, and held the confidence of the people to a remarkable degree.
While a Resident of Wisconsin he served three terms in the state legislature, and while a resident of this county two terms in the Iowa lower house.
In 1876 he was elected State Senator and in this capacity the fine qualities of his mind and prudence in legislative functions was clearly demonstrated, and the confidence of his constituency in his ability brought to them the best of results.
In 1848 he married Lucy A. Brewer, of Unadilla, New York, and one daughter Mrs. Eva Peterson, is the only living child. In the life of this old Patriarch we find his biography to be the repetition of the county’s early history, so closely related was he to the public interests of early times. Connected as he has been in the life and interests of the community for so many years, it is as the passing away of a past, no longer connected with the future save with the results of his strenuous life.
The old regime is fast passing away and with the death of Dr. Blackman,there are but few remaining to connect the past with the present save by the results of their early guidance. A wise practitioner, a prudent legislator and an educated gentleman, has been called home at last, and the county mourns the loss of one of her oldest inhabitants.
The funeral execises were held from the Baptist church, Tuesday morning, being conducted by J. A. Lapham, an old friend of the deceased, assisted by Rev. Coon, pastor of the Baptist church. The remains were taken to Mitchell for interment in the local cemetery.
