Vera G. Penney

Funeral services were held Thursday, March 24, 1988 at Donohue-Lensing Funeral Home for Very G. Penney, 94, of Iowa City, formerly of Osage. The Reverend Charles Downing officiated and burial was in the Memory Gardens Cemetery there. She died Monday, March 21, 1988 after a short illness at the Solon Care Center.

Mrs. Penney was born December 28, 1893 in Mitchell County, the daughter of Edward J. and Luva Whipple Torney. She married Arthur L. Penney, August 2, 1917 in Mitchell County. She was a teacher in the Mitchell County school system before moving to Iowa City in 1945. She was matron of Women's (Halsey) Gym at the University of Iowa, retiring in 1964.

Mrs. Penney was a member of First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, and Iowa City Women's Club.

Survivors include four sons, Clair of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, Keith of Wichita Falls, Texas, Craig of Sunnyvale, California, and Lance of Libertyville, Illinois; five daughters, Betty O'Reilly of Freedom, California, Shirley (Mrs. George) Rummelhart of Coralville, Patricia (Mrs. Bill) Lee of Savannah, Illinois, Phyllis Hirt of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, and Dorotha (Mrs. Frank) Thoman of Iowa City; one sister, Celia Torney of Minneapolis; 31 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one daughter; and five brothers.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, Iowa City.
