Ellen (Criddle) Jeffries
July 25, 1829 – February 13, 1904
Last Saturday death called one of the early pioneer women of Mitchell County, across the dark river separating life and eternity. For several weeks it was known that soon the home circle would again be broken in spite of all that loving hands of children and friends of the invalid could bestow.
In the death of grandma Jeffries a useful and Christian life has ceased but as a legacy to this community she leaves a family of sons and daughters whose honorable lives are attuned to the early teaching and admonition of a true and considerate mother. Such earthly sacrifice as was necessary on the part of the pioneer women of this county who came here in an early day and assisted in the building up of a community like we now enjoy will surely be rewarded by the custodian of the afterlife.
Ellen Criddle whose death occurred at her home in Rock Township, Saturday February 13, 1904 after eight weeks of suffering, was born in Somersetshire England, July 25, 1829. She was married at Oxbridge, England (Axbridge, Somerset, England) Dec. 17,1849, to Jesse Jeffries, whose death occurred at the old home Oct 10, 1895.
In 1850, they came to America and settled in Porter, Rock County, Wisconsin, where they remained for fifteen years, coming to Mitchell County Iowa in 1865, settling in Rock Township on the farm where her death occurred.
Twelve children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jeffries, seven of whom survive her, four sons and three daughters, as follows: Ed, George, and Clem, Mrs. Lillian Wayne of Rock township, Mrs. Nellie Stokes of Waterloo and Fred, and Mrs. Fannie (Francis) Du Shane of Osage.
Besides these she is survived by 31 grandchildren, four brothers and one sister.
Mrs. Jeffries was a member of the Universalist Church of Osage and was a true and thoughtful Christian neighbor, ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. The funeral service was held at the late home last Tuesday, Rev. Ralph of the Universalist church officiating. Kind and Loving friends remembered the deceased with many beautiful flowers
Interment occurred in the Osage Cemetery.
