Funeral services were conducted Monday afternoon at 1:15 at the home and 1:30 at the First Lutheran church for Anna R. Olsen, with the Rev. O.A.Langehough in charge. The Dahl Quartet of Lyle sang two numbers and Sterling Krause sang a solo, "In the Garden". She was laid to rest in the Evergreen Cemetry midst a profusion of beautiful flowers.
Anna Randene Olsen, daughter of J.H. Olsen and Rande Olsen, was born December 2, 1874, at Green Bay, Wisconsin. This was a newly settled community so there was no established church or resident pastor, but in January, 1875, Rev. Th. Dahl, president of the Lutheran church, came to Green Bay and Anna was baptized when about two months old.
In 1876 the Olsens with their small family migrated to the St. Ansgar settlement which had been established by Rev. Clausen and his followers some twenty years before. Here the family made its permanent home, leaving St. Ansgar for only a few years which were spent in Osage.
This community had a well organized church with a resident pastor and on October 6, 1889, Anna was confirmed by Rev. J. Olsen. She remained an active member of this church the rest of her life. All church activities had her earnest support. She was a Sunday school teacher for a number of years.
Anna received her elementary education in the public schools of St. Ansgar. There was no high school course in the school at that time so she attended the St. Ansgar Seminary, a school established and supported by the Lutheran church. Later she attended the Teachers College at Cedar Falls and the Iowa State College at Ames. Anna chose teaching as her profession and began her career in the rural schools of Mitchell county. She entered the St. Ansgar school faculty as a High School teacher. Here she remained until she was called to Osage. She remained in that system for 12 years. She also taught at the Seminary with educators as Professors Ekilund, Kensgaard and H.S. Houg. Her work as a teacher was more than teaching facts. She endeavered to teach her pupils to be honest, God fearing men and women. But teaching did not complete her work as a public servant. When the Nissen Library became a certainty, she did her best to make it a successful concern. She worked for a number of years on the Library Board, as Librarian, her interest, untiring efforts and knowledge helped make this library a real influence in the community.
She was a charter member of the Study Club which has been an influence for good in many lines. She was to be at the twenty-fifth anniversary of this club this fall and did a great deal to make it a success.
Anna was a great lover and student of nature, and was generous in sharing her knowledge with others. She was very public spirited and was always willing to give of her time and to promote any project for the general welfare.
For the last few years she has been in failing health and on the afternon of April 18 at 6:30 o'clock, four weeks of patient suffering, Anna, peacefully slept away.
She leaves to mourn her passing, two sisters, Jennie C. Olsen of St. Ansgar, Mary Whitaker of Osage; two brothers, T.C. Olsen of Waterloo, and _____Olsen of Minneapolis: one nephew, John Jay Whitaker of Osage a niece, Grace Whitaker, also of Osage, and a host of friends.
