Delbert Lenis Lester Seidel was born on February 8, 1928, near Luana, Iowa. He was the son of Fred Seidel and his wife, Selma, nee Lenth. After spending his childhood days in various places in Clayton county, he moved with his parents to a farm two miles northeast of Riceville, Iowa, in the fall of 1939.
Saturday, October 12, Delbert was seriously taken ill with the dread disease of polio. The same night he was taken to the hospital in Iowa City, where he began to fail fast. There he passed away at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, October 12, at the age of 20 years, eight months and four days.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday afternoon, October 14. The service at the home of his parents was conducted by Rev. W. Leckband, of Buckeye, who, as the former pastor of the family, also, spoke a few words of sonsolation to the bereaved. At 2 o'clock the service continued at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Riceville, conducted by Rev. W. Schroeder, who based his sermon on James 4:14. Interment was made in the St. Peter's Lutheran church cemetery, south of Riceville.
Besides his parents, Delbert leaves to mourn, his brother, Harold Seidel, and sisters, Bernice, Mrs. Merrill Ring, and Milda, Mrs. Arnold Heiden, all of near Riceville.
In infancy, on February 26, 1926, Delbert was received into the Lutheran Church at Luana by Holy baptism through the Rev. H. Krumpf. He renewed his baptismal vow on May 25, 1941 when he was confirmed by Rev. Leckband. Delbert was a faithful member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Riceville, a quiet, unassuming young man devoted to his parents and regularly attended the services of his church. During his brief stay in Iowa City, he was spiritually cared for by the Lutheran Chaplain for the Iowa City Hospitals, the Rev. John Schlipskek.
